Sweet victory

The last time you heard from me it was on the eve of the Birmingham Bowl. I motored down to my parents’ house in Gainesville, Florida, and the next day, Dec. 21, I found myself sitting near my 82-year-old father in his (tasteful) recliner watching the Demon Deacons take on Memphis. My dad is the ultimate sports fan, keeping at the ready a carefully torn newspaper scrap with every bowl game’s time and date.

It’s rare for us to watch a game together. What I treasure most about that afternoon was spending precious time with my dad, followed by cheering with him as Wake Forest made its astonishing comeback: Memphis missing an all-important field goal, Wake Forest never giving up on its march to victory. Our yells shook the house, all the way to the sunroom, where my mother watches every Hallmark Christmas movie for the umpteenth time while my dad watches sports in the den. All was right with the world.

It might seem like old news, but this is the first newsletter of the new year, my first chance to share a story to confirm, yes, indeed, it was a fine holiday season and as CBSsports.com reported, a barn burner of a game.

Happy 2019,

Maria Henson
