WakeParents & Families

E-newsletter from the Office of Family Engagement

This past week we dealt with an unexpected visitor: Hurricane Florence. We were fortunate to come out relatively unscathed — a lot of rain here and some wind — but are mindful that many Wake Foresters to the east and south of us are facing a significant and lengthy recovery period. Our thoughts and prayers are with all our affected Deac families.

In the good news department, Family Weekend is less than two weeks away! Here is some important information from the Office of the Dean of Students (who plans Family Weekend):

  • Family Weekend is almost here! We're gearing up to greet our Demon Deacon families Sept. 28-30. Please note that online registration and ticket sales will close Friday, Sept. 21 at 11:59 p.m.
  • As the weekend approaches, families may have a variety of questions. Please visit our Frequently Asked Questions page.
  • Picking up your website purchases, including football tickets, when you arrive on campus: All purchased items will be available for pickup at the Benson University Center in the third floor rotunda: Friday, Sept. 28 from 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 29, from 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. If needed, your student will be able to pick up your order with student ID. Please note: Beginning Saturday morning, all football tickets not picked up on Friday will be held at the Athletic Ticket Office at BB&T Field. The will-call window at Bridger Field House should be open at 1:30 p.m. Kickoff for the WFU vs Rice football game is set for 3:30 p.m.
  • Parking on Campus during the weekend: Friday: weather permitting, there will be additional parking available for visitors on the lower part of Davis Field. Saturday: Families are free to park anywhere on campus not marked as "reserved."
  • Parking at the football game: Game day parking is available at the LJVM Coliseum for $15 per car. Because of the Dixie Classic Fair, parking may be limited. Free shuttles to the game will be available to the stadium area from Lot P, and for those attending the Cookout, special shuttles will run from the front of the Benson Center directly to Couch Baseball Park beginning 2.5 hours prior to kickoff time. Game time will be announced about 10 days before the game.
  • Clear Bag Policy: there is now a new clear bag policy for football games at BB&T Field. Clear bags will be on sale in the Registration Area and at the campus bookstore on Hearn Plaza.

Please read the full Family Weekend message and know we can't wait to welcome you to campus!

From Residence Life and Housing:

The Office of Residence Life and Housing continues to work with the Office of Family Engagement and other campus partners to provide support to students impacted by Hurricane Florence. We recognize that not everyone in our community will be able to return to normalcy at this time. Those experiencing personal and family challenges have our support and understanding.

The deadline to apply for Room Thaw (open room change) is tomorrow, Sept. 18 at 11:59 p.m., more information is available at

Health and Safety Inspections are next week, Sept. 24-26, more information is available at

The Student Health Service is encouraging the entire Wake Forest community to get a flu vaccine this year. Many insurance cards will also be accepted. As part of Family Weekend, the Student Health Service staff will be giving flu shots to students who come to the Campus Life Open House in the Wellbeing Center on Friday, Sept. 28 from 1 - 5 p.m.. The cost of the injection is $30 and will be applied to the student's account (no insurance is accepted other than Student Blue).

From WakeWare: You can still take advantage of Summer Promotions both online and at the WFU Campus Bookstore, located on Hearn Plaza in Taylor Hall. WakeWare, the Student Laptop Program, is open all year long and allows you to purchase a laptop that is guaranteed to work with all academic software, has educational-based pricing (for greater discounts), provides a loaner laptop in case repairs are needed, and has built-in accidental damage protection.

Campus Safety

We encourage parents and others to sign up to receive crime alerts on the Wake Ready website, in addition to downloading the LiveSafe app. While crime alerts are sent in real time to students, faculty and staff, they are not for others. For those registered through Wake Ready, crime alerts are emailed daily at noon, but only if new alerts have been posted in the previous 24 hours.
