WakeParents & Families

E-newsletter from the Office of Family Engagement

It's past the midpoint of summer and before we know it the Class of 2022 will be arriving for Orientation - always one of the best parts of the year!

For our P'22 parents and families of incoming first-year students, the Orientation (aka New Deac Week) schedule is now available. Download the WFU Orientation Programs guide (New Deac Orientation 2018). You will find the most up-to-date information, including schedules, maps, and much more.

You may also access the details of the schedule via website here. Note that because we are trying to be more sustainable, we are not printing out paper copies of the Orientation brochure. Instead, please access the Guidebook app: choose "Schedule by Tracks" and then "Parents and Families" to see activities meant for parents and families.

Wishing you and your family all the best for the summer.  Go Deacs!

For first year parents and families (P'22)

Registration will occur over the week of July 16–20 in two rounds. At the student’s designated registration time on July 16, he/she will be permitted to log into WIN and access registration. Students will be allowed to register for up to 10 hours. Please note that this 10-hour limit will include the writing or first year seminar course assigned. This initial round will remain accessible until 11:59 p.m. EDT on July 17. On July 18, at the student’s designated time, registration will reopen to complete the remainder of the fall schedule (up to a max of 17 hours). This final round will remain open until 11:59 p.m. EDT on July 20. This process of registration occurring in two rounds will be similar to how registration will occur in future semesters.

Students will receive a Course Preference Survey on July 13 that will help them organize their thoughts regarding choices of courses for which they hope to register. Once students complete their registration, they must submit the survey to help us learn more about their academic plans. This survey is due July 20.

Please visit the New Students Website and your student's copy of Forestry 101,regarding deadlines and instructions that will prepare you for your transition to Wake Forest.

New parent/family due dates and deadlines regarding Orientation are on the Parents and Families Overview section of the New Students website (scroll down to see dates). Also, please be sure to read the Advice for New Parents and families website.

Incoming Student Housing Assignments:

  • Our incoming students will be receiving their room assignments the week of July 16-20. Students will receive an email at their @wfu.edu account when assignments are ready for viewing in our Housing Portal.
  • Incoming students are not asked for building and/or roommate preferences. Instead, room assignments are based on your student’s responses to the Housing and Dining Application. New students may be assigned to a single, double or triple room based on their preferences and availability. Note that students assigned to single rooms are charged at the single rate. For more on our assignments processes for incoming students, please visit our website.
  • The Daily Deac features a great post with tips for incoming students and families about how to start a roommate relationship successfully. That post can be found HERE.

Dates for Fall 2018 Move-In are as follows: New Students (First-Year and Transfers) – Wednesday, August 22, 2018. Check-in will be available from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Move-in assistance will be available in our first-year communities from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Important computing reminders:

Order your WakeWare laptop online by August 1st if you are shipping it home before coming to campus. You are also able to purchase your WakeWare laptop at the WFU Campus Bookstore, located on Hearn Plaza in Taylor Hall when you arrive on campus. WakeWare, the Student Laptop Program, allows you to purchase a laptop that is guaranteed to work with all academic software, has educational-based pricing (for greater discounts), provides a loaner laptop in case repairs are needed, and has built-in accidental damage protection.

Dell has already announced a $100 rebate for purchases from June 1 until October 15th. There is always the possibility Apple will announce a Back-to-School promotion later this summer. Any information available about summer promotions will be posted on the WakeWare website.

Students who receive institutional aid from Wake Forest (athletic, merit, or need-based) may be eligible for a Technology Grant. Eligible students were contacted through their Wake Forest email in late May. Please contact the WakeWare Program Manager with any questions you may have at WakeWare@wfu.edu

Mail Services has an update about how students are notified that they have packages, the cost of lost Post Office Box keys, delivery of packages or flowers, and more. Read it here.

Campus Safety

We encourage parents and others to sign up to receive crime alerts on the Wake Ready web site, in addition to downloading the LiveSafe app. While crime alerts are sent in real time to students, faculty and staff, they are not for others. For those registered through Wake Ready, crime alerts are emailed daily at noon, but only if new alerts have been posted in the previous 24 hours.
