Families of Incoming First-Year Students – Class of 2021

Move-In Day is August 23, and general parent and family orientation activities will take place on August 23-24. Please be sure to visit the Parents and Families section of the New Students website. This is your place for due dates and action items as your Deac gets ready to attend Wake Forest.

During the summer, New Student Receptions will be held across the country so parents and students can meet other incoming students and families. At these receptions, you will also meet current Wake Forest students and staff and have an opportunity to ask questions of the experts. Registration will open shortly; we hope to see your family at a reception!

One of the best ways you can help prepare your student for success at Wake Forest is to let him or her solve problems (as opposed to your helping your student take care of them). Why? Your problem-solving skills are already great because you've been solving problems and thinking through complexities for years. Now it is their turn to flex their muscles and develop those skills! We refer to this as the Stop, Drop, & Roll method — and encourage you to read this and use it throughout your Deac's time on campus.

Purchase a laptop through the student laptop program, WakeWare, or bring your own from home. WakeWare is the student laptop program that allows you to purchase a laptop guaranteed to work with all academic software, has educational-based pricing, provides a loaner laptop in case repairs are needed, and has built-in accidental damage protection. For students who receive institutional aid from Wake Forest (need- or merit-based), we encourage you to wait to purchase until the Program Manager emails your student's WFU email later this month with instructions regarding how to redeem the grant! More information is available online. If your student is bringing a laptop from home, please make sure it meets the minimum set requirements found here.

From the Office of Academic Advising (OAA):

  • The OAA is open during our normal business hours over the summer, and staff members are available to answer questions in person, over the phone, or via email. As a reminder, the Office of Academic Advising is open Monday, Wednesday-Friday from 8:30 am until 5 pm and Tuesday from 9:30 am until 5 pm. You can reach us by phone at 336-758-3320, or via email at
  • New incoming students will receive registration surveys this summer. The first of these will be sent in mid-June. Specific dates for registration surveys will be announced via email, so students should be periodically checking their Wake Forest email accounts. Information pertaining to survey dates will also be made available on our New Student Website.
  • The New Students Website is now live! Students and families can access the website here: If your student will be an incoming first-year student in the fall, s/he will be registering for up to 12 credit hours during Round 1 of registration, July 24-28.

Summer Session is nearly here, but there is still time to register for classes. If your student has recently been accepted to begin at Wake Forest in fall 2017, he/she can consider getting started early by taking some classes this summer. Newly admitted and visiting students should submit an online application for Session II by June 28. Current WFU students can register in WIN until May 30, and should contact the Summer School office to make registration changes after that date. If students have any questions regarding summer classes at Wake Forest, contact us here. We look forward to seeing your students for a beautiful summer in the forest!

Rebecca Alexander, Professor of Chemistry, Director of Academic Programming for Wake Downtown, and F.M. Kirby Family Faculty Fellow, shares an update on Wake Downtown: "We have just completed our first semester at Wake Downtown. Eighteen classes met each week, including "Historic Preservation," "Literacy in the 21st Century," and a First Year Seminar "The Analytical Chemistry of Sherlock Holmes." Students declared majors in the two new programs: in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, and Medicinal Chemistry & Drug Discovery." Read more.

Resources and Deadlines

Student Financial Services: Please remember that all Summer school tuition and fees are due by June 1st. SFS will pre-bill all students on June 1st as well. This gives families an idea of what they will owe on the final Fall tuition due date of August 1st and also gives students/families time to waive health insurance or make any other changes that are needed. Another bill will be available around July 1st, but the due date for Fall tuition is always August 1st.

The 2017-2018 Student Health Insurance open enrollment period will be 6/1/17 - 8/1/17. All students, new and returning, are required to make an election regarding coverage (enroll or waive), as health insurance is required for full-time enrollment at the University. During this time, elections can be made online at In order to waive, you must provide proof of coverage that meets the University criteria. Please visit for more information, or email to

Wells Fargo ATM locations close to campus can be found at 2925 Reynolda Road and 720 Coliseum Drive.

It feels different
May 16, 2017

It feels very different on campus now that all the students are gone and no families are here. You can see what his happening on the Quad via the Quad Cam — as of lunchtime Tuesday, the 13,000 chairs are off the grass and neatly stacked or removed. We hope all our families had a great Commencement experience. [more ...]
